S4 Brakes
The original
brakes were Mk1 Escort discs - these were 8.5 inch diameter and
rubbish - The callipers were shot but the car came with two
refurbished callipers - the bad news was that these were
callipers from the later MK2 Escort and they did not fit the MK1
hubs that were fitted to the car.
Luckily as I was
going to upgrade anyway I got hold of some complete MK2 strut and
brake assemblies - the MK2 has larger 9.6 inch discs and
uses the bigger M16 callipers - the other bonus is that the Capri
2.8i ventilated discs fit on the MK2 hub and kits to space
the M16 calliper can be bought so that they fit the wider vented
disc.
Another good thing
is that the same discs also fit also fit the Cortina hub
which was a good thing as the next round of modifications listed
on the suspension pages resulted in the fitting of Cortina
uprights with the double wishbone changes. I chose not to fit the
ventilated set-up from the Capri to the S4 as the plain disc was
more than up to the task and the vented set-up would be far
better employed on the more powerful cars.
Being such a light
car there is no need to fit vented discs to the Dutton the
standard Escort MK2 disc is more than man enough for the job and with
some good pads will take the spirited of driving or light
competition work in their stride.
