Engines and Gearboxes for your Phaeton

 

I hope to list here all the engines and types of boxes that can and have been used in Dutton Phaetons and also any special parts that are need to fit them, some of them also provide the rear axle as well I have identified these with an asterix.

The Ford Engines

The Ford pre cross-flow engines form the early Cortina and Anglia ranges in capacities up to 1500cc and the very special Lotus 1558 twin cam variant.

The Ford "Kent" cross-flow design from the Cortina MK2 to the present day in the Ford KA ! - best variants are from the Escort MK2 1600 Sport with the stronger 711 block - plenty of tuned versions around and cheap and plentyful - can be tuned to some silly power but start to become pretty hard to drive about 135BHP. some versions reported to be out to almost 1900cc and develop over 200BHP these are built using a really strong AX series block.

The Ford "Pinto" Single overhead cam from the Cortina MK3 and Capri and the RS Escort. a plentiful cheap and quite powerful engine - 115BHP from the later injection Sierra engines with the stronger 205 block. Can be tuned to produce an easy 150BHP and over 200BHP possible on bigger capacity 2.3 engines.

The Ford CVH from the MK3 Escort and the later model Sierra's the 1600 EFI escort engine from the XR3i much better than the 1800 from the Sierra as far as tuning potential goes - very underrated.

Sierra I4 8 valve DOHC engine from the late model Sierra 2.0L cars a nice high torque engine with better breathing than the SOHC Pinto - not much available for tuning as these quickly replaced by the more available and better Zetec.

Mondeo Zetec engines 1600 1800 and 2000 16 Valve engines great engines for reliability but power outputs pretty lame in standard form with only 130 BHP from  the 2000L 16 valver can be tuned to develop some good power outputs up to 240BHP but really gets expensive. Different types of Zetec's E's S's etc. some much better than others.

Sierra Cosworth Sapphire 2.0L turbo a fantastic engine but with suspect reliability at high power outputs - 205BHP as standard and 400+BHP with big boosts and cams.

Ford Duratec engines - developments of the Zetec and supposed to be far better than the original Zetec.

Essex 2.5L and 3.0L engines - up to 3.1L in the RS Capri with a super hi torque 138BHP - a super heavy weight engine with a few weaknesses but on the whole very reliable and plentlyful.

Cologne in 2.3 and 2.8L capacities with 150BHP derivative in the last of the line 2.8i Capri's ultimate tuning capability limited by the siamese port design heads and the restrictive port design of the injection system.

Cosworth 2.9 double overhead cam - a real nice engine from the Scorpio Granada with loads of power available up to 300BHP with 3.2L capacity

Alfa Romeo engines

I love these engines they have everything you could wish for twin cams all alloy construction a great racing pedigree and a specification most other engines can just dream of.

1300, 1600, 1750 and 2000 twin cam engines. All the same design with up to 132BHP from the 2.0L - the 1779 (1750) hailed as the most flexible and the sweetest of the bunch, very lightweight all alloy (including the gearbox and the rear axle casing if you go for the whole drive chain) These are available from the 105 series coupes but the engines are also the same from the later Giulietta and Alfetta cars although there are differences in the flywheels etc. because these models use a transaxle and not an inline gearbox.

There is also the later 75 twin-spark engine which develops a staggering 155BHP in standard form with a bucket load of torque to match. This engine can be made to develop far more power with a few simple tweaks but unlike the newer 16 valve engines the twin-spark does not lose out on bottom end torque with its Variable cam timing system.

Fitting this engine is a little more difficult because of the injection and the ignition systems needing a little more thought than carbs and points and two distributors make life a little harder. However the rewards are well worth it.

The Alfa Six – What an engine and one which I will have to squeeze into a B+ at some point in the future now that conversions are being done by the Locost boys.

Triumph Engines

The little triumph push rod four pots from the Herald, Spifire, and the smaller saloons are trusty little cast iron power units that are very dated in design and quite low in output as standard although the spitfire 1300 and later 1500 units with twin-carbs and better heads and cams do a reasonable job. These engines can be made to develop better power with the availability heaps of specialist tuning parts.

6’s

Triumph Vitesse, GT6, 2000, 2500 TR6 etc. straight six engines can be coaxed into the engine bay of a Dutton and offer silky smooth power and tons of torque and an engine note that is music to the ears. Again the popularity of these classic engines does mean that there are plenty of tuning specialists providing tuning and dress-up parts.
